French Bulldogs Are A Trend

The origin of French bulldogs can be traced back to England. French bulldogs are said to be descendants of the miniature variety of English Bulldogs that have tulip-ears, and are short, under-jawed specimens. They used to be commonly found in London, Nottingham, Birmingham, and Sheffield before they were brought to France by lace workers in Normandy.

These types of bulldogs were kept by the first few French owners as companions, guardians, and vermin catchers. When French bulldogs were moved into the cities of France, they became the constant companions of Paris prostitutes. Owning French bulldogs soon became a trend among writers, fashion designers and avant-garde artists, and in no time at all, the French bulldogs became the ultimate fashion statements.

By the late nineteenth century, several French bulldogs found their way back to England. English breeders despised them because they did not meet the requirements of English bulldogs standards. Owners of both types of dogs would not want to interbreed them as the result might only be to the detriment of their respective breeds.

There are apparent similarities between the French bulldogs and the English variety. There were disputes, however, as to the essential differences between the breeds. This led the English Kennel Club to intervene in 1905. It was decided to keep the two types rigidly apart; the smart little bat-eared bulldogs of France were given the breed name of Bouledogues Francais in 1905. The name was later changed to French bulldog in 1912.

In addition to the very distinctive bat ears of French bulldogs, they have also flat skulls. They have short bodies with a broad, deep chest typical of a bulldog. They possess muscular forelegs, a bit shorter than the hind legs, and a very short, wide nose. The coats of French bulldogs are finely textured, short and smooth with colors that include shades of brindle, white, and a combination of both.

Rich Americans who traveled to Europe would often bring French bulldogs back home. They became a hit in New York, not only among the socialites but also among the dog breeders who obtained breeding stock from France for propagation purposes.

French bulldogs became favorite accessories of every lady or aspiring lady. Price tags reached four figures, which only increased their trendy appeal. It was also during this time when French bulldogs were recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Although bulldogs, including French bulldogs, were originally trained to fight bulls, they have become lovable household companions. French bulldogs are among the top of the list if you are looking for sweetness and devoted one-person pets.

French bulldogs are easy to care for because they are quite content with a daily rubdown using a rough cloth. French bulldogs do not need much exercise. They are clean and quiet animals, and have adapted very well to city life.
